HOSPITALITY FESTIVAL
Piazza della Libertà
First Saturday ofSeptember
This festival celebrates a tradition which dates back to 1300

for each family in the town. When a traveler came to town, he
would tie his horse to one of the rings, automatically choosing
the family who would be his host. Every year on the first Sunday
of September, this hospitality ritual is reenacted. For info:

SEGAVECCHIA CELEBRATION
In the streets and squares of the town
TWO SUNDAYS IN MARCH AND THURSDAY HALFWAY THROUGH LENT Open: All day - Entry: free (an entry charge is made in the afternoon
to see the floats)
This is a traditional, popular celebration put on on a grand
scale. Its origins probably hark back to ancient fertility rites
and the return of spring. Not only is it Forlimpopoli’s
most traditional festival, it is also the oldest celebrated in
Romagna today. The strange name probably comes from Florence,
where it was common practice to saw a large puppet in half on
the Thursday halfway through Lent, reenacting pagan and indo-Christian
medieval rituals. Towards the first half of the 16th century,
this practice took on a more light-hearted character with banquets,
dances, masks and floats. One of these floats was pulled by oxen
and carried an enormous old lady. More than four centuries later,
the essence of this deep-rooted celebration remains: an excuse
for a second Carnival in Lent.
